According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 2.22 square miles (5.75 km2); 2.11 square miles (5.46 km2) is territory and 0.11 square miles (0.28 km2) is water. Interstate 94 and Minnesota State Highway 238 are two of the chief routes in the city.

As of 2000 the median income for a homehold in the town/city was $31,577, and the median income for a family was $41,118.

About 6.0% of families and 10.3% of the populace were below the poverty line, including 12.0% of those under age 18 and 14.1% of those age 65 or over.

As of the census of 2010, there were 2,561 citizens , 1,030 homeholds, and 657 families residing in the city.

There were 1,030 homeholds of which 36.3% had kids under the age of 18 living with them, 48.4% were married couples living together, 10.6% had a female homeholder with no husband present, 4.8% had a male homeholder with no wife present, and 36.2% were non-families.

The Albany Public School District, District #745, is a merged school precinct with a junior high school serving grades 7 8, and a senior high school serving grades 9 12 in easterly Albany.

The Albany Elementary School serves Pre - K 6, and is on the same ground site as the secondary schools.

Another elementary school in the district, Avon Elementary School, serves Pre - K 6, and is six miles east of Albany in close-by Avon.

Albany Elementary and Albany Junior/Senior High both underwent primary additions and renovations in 1996.

Holy Family School, a K 6 Roman Catholic parochial school, is also in Albany.

Albany is part of Minnesota House District 12 - B, which is represented by Paul Anderson (R); and Minnesota Senate District 12, which is represented by Torrey Westrom (R).

Albany is also part of Minnesota's 7th congressional district, presently represented in the U.S.
