The town/city is positioned between the twin lakes of Chisago Lake and Green Lake, and is part of the Chisago lakes region.

According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 14.99 square miles (38.82 km2), of which, 12.53 square miles (32.45 km2) is territory and 2.46 square miles (6.37 km2) is water. Chisago City was established by Swedish immigrants in the 1850s. The town/city took its name from Chisago Lake. It was originally settled one mile south, but when the barns bypassed the town in 1880, the town/city moved closer to the barns , as often happened amid that time. As of the census of 2010, there were 4,967 citizens , 2,051 homeholds, and 1,306 families residing in the city.

There were 2,209 housing units at an average density of 176.3 per square mile (68.1/km2).

The ethnic makeup of the town/city was 96.7% White, 0.6% African American, 0.5% Native American, 0.6% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.3% from other competitions, and 1.1% from two or more competitions.
