The populace was 13,680 at the 2010 census. Marshall is a county-wide center in southwest Minnesota, and the governmental center of county of Lyon County. Marshall is the command posts of the Schwan Food Company and the home of Southwest Minnesota State University.

Marshall is also the site of Exelon Wind's Marshall Wind Project. Marshall was platted in 1872 when the barns was extended to that point. Lake Marshall Township had been established in the region two years earlier, and encompassed a postal service and a several farms.

Marshall became an incorporated village in 1876, and a town/city on February 20, 1901.

In April, 1874, the small-town paper estimated the populace of Marshall at 300, by 1900 the populace was 2,088.

Marshall has a mayor and town/city council that meet twice monthly.

The primary divisions of town/city hall are City Administration, Community Services, Economic Development, General Services, Public Safety, and Public Works.

Public schools in precinct 413 include Marshall Senior High School, Marshall Middle School, Parkside Elementary, and West Side Elementary.

Private schools include Holy Redeemer, Marshall Area Christian, and Samuel Lutheran School.

Southwest Minnesota State University is a public, four year liberal arts and experienced studies institution.

The prominent Holocaust and genocide studies scholar, Eric Markusen, worked as a professor of Sociology and Social Work at Southwest Minnesota State University.
