According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 4.12 square miles (10.67 km2), of which 4.03 square miles (10.44 km2) is territory and 0.09 square miles (0.23 km2) is water. The town/city of Mounds View was positioned in the former Mounds View Township, which was organized in 1858. In 1958, 100 years after Minnesota's ascension to statehood, the village of Mounds View was incorporated.

The town/city is primarily residentiary, with a several company parks and businesses positioned in Mounds View.

In 2005, the Mounds View City Council voted to sell the town/city owned golf course to Medtronic, Inc., for a new campus.
