State of Minnesota at the southern tip of Big Stone Lake, along the border with South Dakota.

The populace was 1,916 at the 2010 census. It is the governmental center of county of Big Stone County. Big Stone Lake State Park is nearby.

Ortonville was platted in 1872 by Cornelius Knute Orton, and titled for him. Ortonville was incorporated as a town/city in 1881. According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 3.56 square miles (9.22 km2), of which 3.51 square miles (9.09 km2) is territory and 0.05 square miles (0.13 km2) is water. Highways 12 and 75 and Minnesota State Highway 7 are three of the chief routes in the city.
