Pelican Rapids was platted in 1872, and titled for the rapids on the Pelican River. A postal service has been in operation at Pelican Rapids since 1872. Pelican Rapids was incorporated in 1882. According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 2.63 square miles (6.81 km2), of which 2.53 square miles (6.55 km2) is territory and 0.10 square miles (0.26 km2) is water. As of the census of 2010, there were 2,464 citizens , 904 homeholds, and 569 families residing in the city.
