The populace was 4,317 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat. The town/city is also the site of the Pipestone National Monument.

Pipestone was platted in 1876. Pipestone took its name from Pipestone County. The town/city was incorporated in 1901. According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 4.18 square miles (10.83 km2), all of it land. The ethnic makeup of the town/city was 90.2% White, 0.9% African American, 1.9% Native American, 1.1% Asian, 3.5% from other competitions, and 2.4% from two or more competitions.
