According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 8.24 square miles (21.34 km2), of which 6.98 square miles (18.08 km2) is territory and 1.26 square miles (3.26 km2) is water. It borders the metros/cities of Shoreview, Little Canada, White Bear Lake, Maplewood, North Oaks, and Gem Lake.

Highway 61, and County Highway 96 are four of the chief routes in Vadnais Heights.

Vadnais Heights has a humid continental climate. This hot-summer subtype is typical of south-central Minnesota and includes wet summers and dry cold winters.

White Bear Lake Area Public Schools (ISD 624) serves the majority of the region of Vadnais Heights, with the exception of the northwestern portion of the town/city served by Mounds View Public Schools (ISD 621).

An elementary school in the White Bear Lake School District, Vadnais Heights Elementary, is positioned at Centerville Road and County Road E.

An autonomous charter school, the Academy for Sciences and Agriculture High School, is positioned by Vadnais Lake.
